MEET PAULA
I am a Registered Nurse who wants to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families by helping them navigate through our fragmented healthcare system.
Working as a hospital RN for over 35 years has given me the experience to pursue a direction change in my career to patient advocacy. My positions have included both bedside nursing and administrative roles. As a staff nurse I have worked in the critical care units, postpartum and the nursery, pre-operative care, including pre-admission testing, and also in recovery of surgical and procedural patients. I have also trained many RNs new to these roles. My administrative experience included Clinical Specialist for the critical care and telemetry departments, and Charge RN for a busy post-surgical unit. Another role was Clinical Instructor for second year nursing students from California State University, Fresno.
My Healthcare Journey.
When my mother and then a year later my father experienced life-changing illnesses, I was confident that as a hospital RN I would be able to guide all of us through these extremely difficult situations. To my shock and surprise I was lost in the maze of options and decisions that had to be made quickly and with no one to help us navigate through the uncertainty we were facing. We were on our own!
Through this journey with my parents I realized how important it is to have an experienced advocate by your side to help navigate you and your family through our complex healthcare system. This was when I made the decision to attend the RN Patient Advocate Learning Intensive through the College of Nursing at the University of Arizona.
I have always advocated for my patients to ensure they receive the best and most appropriate care possible. Also, working with the entire health care team for many years has given me the skills to communicate and collaborate effectively. I will work for you and your family to decrease the stress of a medical crisis, research your medical condition to help you understand what it means for you, and attend appointments with you to relay your concerns and questions to your health care providers. Having someone to look out for your best interest and provide clear information relevant to your specific health care situation will give you and your family the confidence to make the best decision possible on your healthcare journey.
